The University of Münster

Founded in 1780, the University of Münster is one of the largest and most prestigious higher education institutions in Germany. With around 43,000 students, 640 professors and 4,500 research staff, it plays a significant role in national and international academia. Its two Clusters of Excellence, ‘Religion and Politics’ and ‘Mathematics Münster’, have positioned the university among the top German institutions in the German government’s Excellence Initiative.

Education

The University of Münster’s 15 faculties offer 280 courses of study in 120 subjects, covering almost all areas of the humanities, social sciences, medicine and natural sciences, including more than 25 international degree programmes. Teaching is closely integrated with research, creating a dynamic learning environment that fosters academic excellence.

A hallmark of the University is its teacher training, which accounts for around a quarter of all students. The institution fosters collaboration between s subject didactics, educational sciences and subject sciences to prepare research-based and highly competent educators.

The university awards around 5,500 degrees each year and is the second largest in the country in terms of the number of degrees awarded. This strong performance underscores its position as a leader in both the quality and efficiency of higher education.

The University of Münster actively contributes to both national and regional development. Through various partnerships, it supports the social, educational, and cultural growth of the communities it serves. This sense of responsibility is a core value within the university community.

Münster’s global partnerships with over 550 universities and scientific institutions enhance its capacity for impactful research and education.
