PAX joined the 12th annual International Conference of the Immersive Learning Research Network (iLRN2026) in Athens, the premier scholarly event on immersive learning, hosted this year by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens under the theme “From Plato’s Cave to Open Immersive Societies: Transforming Learning and Knowledge”.
Over four days of keynotes, paper presentations, and hands-on immersive experiences — opening with an inspiring keynote by Guido Makransky (University of Copenhagen) — the PAX team presented the project’s latest results to an international audience of researchers, educators, and practitioners working at the intersection of XR technologies and education.
Presenting the PAX Development Environment
A highlight of our participation was the presentation of the PAX Development Environment (PDE) by Celina Khongklad and Sander Winters, developed in collaboration with Marc Krüger (FH Münster). The PDE is a free online platform that helps educators and XR developers co-develop XR learning applications, bridging the gap between the two communities. Try it here: PAX Development Environment
The XR Compass in the spotlight
Our partners at PH Wien also presented an extended abstract titled “XR Compass as evidence-informed guidance for the design, implementation and evaluation of immersive learning scenarios”, co-authored by Benjamin Brandic and Renate Burian — bringing the PAX competence framework into the international research conversation.
Why it matters
If four days at iLRN2026 confirmed one thing, it is this: research on XR and immersive learning is thriving, yet the perspective of teachers is still too rarely at the center of the conversation. Without teachers, the integration of XR into education either cannot happen or remains a one-time event. This is precisely the gap PAX set out to close — and Athens was a strong confirmation that our work is on the right track.
PAX was represented by Frauke Matz, Sander Winters, Prof. Dr. Jure Purgaj, Alena Jůvová, Celina Khongklad, and Ondřej Duda, alongside colleagues from PH Wien — four days of exchanging ideas, discussing challenges, and exploring the future of immersive learning together.
